Between 7th-16th/1/1977, Afmeco conducted a rotary mud drilling programme in the Christmas Well and Caldina (Creek) areas of EL 176. 12 vertical holes with a total penetration of 1992 m were drilled and then were geophysically logged with gamma ray, resistivity and self potential wireline probes. The holes were located to test the uranium potential of sites in the Tertiary stratigraphic sequence where suspected Unit T1 palaeodepositional channelling had been influenced by structural trends. No mineralised sediments or radioactivity anomalies were found in the Christmas Well area holes, and further drilling there cannot be justified. In the Caldina area, weak radioactivity anomalies were seen to be present at sand-carbonaceous clay bed lithologic contacts in both Unit T1 and the underlying Unit T2. The anomalies seen at the base of Unit T1 in holes C-3, C-4 and C-5 warrant follow-up drilling on a closer-spaced grid. However, Afmeco's expenditure and success record to date on investigating similar types of anomalies in EL 176, and elsewhere in the Lake Frome region, also cannot justify further drilling in the Caldina area. Afmeco has decided either to wholly farm out the licence, without spending any more on exploration, or else to abandon it after the expiry date.
