A new coring technique recommended by Christensen Diamond Products has been successfully used by Afmeco to complete four rotary coreholes within unconsolidated Tertiary sediments on the northern Lake Frome Plains (total drilled 1957'5 inches / total cored 257'5 inches). The technique resulted in 100% recovery of cores in all cases except where hard formation, or quartzite cobbles caving from uphole, caused damage to the bit. However, the drilling programme took longer than anticipated because drilling of an 8 inch diameter core hole was slow and tedious, particularly when compared to the Longyear triple-tube HQ3 wireline coring technique being used by Thompson Drilling Co. at Western Nuclear's adjoining Beverley deposits. There a cored hole could be completed in two days, albeit with diminished core recoveries averaging 92-98%. It is therefore recommended that any future coring work be undertaken with this latter method, in order to contain costs over a projected 50,000 foot programme.
