In a search for possible buried stratiform massive base metal sulphides hosted within Cambrian carbonate-dolomitic rocks in the Ragless Range area, Amoco Minerals undertook 1:20,000 scale geological mapping and gridding of the eastern limb of the main synclinal structure to assess the attitude and thickness of the prospective Parachilna Formation strata. Next a programme of hand-auger soil sampling was carried out along twelve east-west traverses of the limb structure, covering 2200 m of strike length of this unit. A few moderate base metal anomalies were disclosed, principally within Parachilna Formation shale beds that immediately overlie the Pound Quartzite. In some instances these anomalies appeared to have "gossanous" surface expressions. In order to try to better define the talus-covered keel of the syncline, and to determine the depth of the Pound Quartzite below possible drilling target horizons, a vertical resistivity sounding survey of four lines spaced 400 m apart was commissioned. The results of this survey were inconclusive, owing to unfavourable ground conditions for electrical signal penetration. Because of its inability to generate a structural target to drill test, and because it had the opinion that the anomalous "gossans" are merely reflecting present surface enrichments of iron, manganese and minor base metals with no sizeable source, the licensee chose to surrender tenure.
