A 271 square km major portion of the eastern part of EL 5860 Claude Hills, which is located in the extreme north-west of South Australia in the Musgrave Ranges, has now been voluntarily relinquished by licensee Austral Nickel Pty Ltd. This portion of ground had been interpreted by recent AGSO 1:100,000 scale geological mapping to be underlain by Birksgate Complex gneissic rocks, but did not appear to contain Ni-Cu-PGE prospective Giles Complex mafic-ultramafic intrusive units. This factor, combined with the results which Austral Nickel obtained from part of an airborne electromagnetic survey that was flown during 2012, led to the recent decision to relinquish this particular area. Between 26/12/2011 and 16/2/2012, under tenure of precursor EL 4751, a total of 726.8 line km of the overall 3440 line km airborne survey coverage fell within the now relinquished licence portion, representing 53 north-south flight lines spaced 250 m apart that were profiled using a 90 m nominal sensor elevation above the ground surface. No anomalous bedrock conductors were defined by this subset of AEM data. Low order linear, clustered and isolated conductivity anomalies are evident within the gneissic terrain of the Birksgate Complex, and these were interpreted to be related to the presence of pyrrhotite-pyrite rich graphitic shale lenses. [Data for the entire 2012 Claude Hills Aerial EM Survey, which was submitted to PIRSA on 21/11/2012, is now older than 5 years and so has been released to open file by DPC under the provisions of the Sunset Clause - see the digital file attachments to Env 11406].
