An area located to cover the Ediacara Range and Mount James Range has been explored to determine if known vein occurrences of barite might be of sufficient quality to be mined and sold for drilling mud additive. No field work occurred during the first two years of tenure, while the licensee performed a review of historic exploration records for the area. During licence Year 3, a field reconnaissance visit was made, and 28 grab rock chip samples were collected from various historic costeans and from outcropping unworked veins. The samples were assayed for a wide range of elements, and SG measurements were made on them. Data for the most promising samples was submitted for comparison against current industry standards (American Petroleum Institute specifications) imposed when selecting barite to use as a drilling mud additive. The comparison showed that at Mount James, it was likely that barite present at the surface could be simply processed to make an API grade product, with little additional beneficiation required. During licence Year 4, the licensee principal returned to the field during September 2015 to undertake detailed geological mapping of many barite vein sets that are partially exposed near Mount James. Weathered outcropping veins belonging to five apparently different swarms were described and photographed: the largest eight veins appeared to be well over 1 m wide, and one of them extends for 1300 m or more; the majority of veins disappear under shallow cover along strike. In total 3.5 km of barite vein exposures were mapped, that included many previously unrecorded veins, but the potential for other veins to exist under cover all around the Mount James area was considered to be high. Another known historically worked barite occurrence at the Warioota prospect in the south of the tenement area was not examined, but it was suggested that it may have similar prospectivity. Barite veins that were <20 cm wide or which consisted mostly of quartz were not mapped, as the intent was to scope the potential for bulk mining of high grade barite, rather than to pursue opportunities for limited selective mining as was clearly the past practice. During licence Year 5, no further field work was done. Although the Mount James barite occurrences were together seen as a viable prospect for drill assessment that might lead to development into a low tonnage (<10, 000) barite mining operation to service the oil and gas industry, the licensee's focus became shifted towards evaluating other barite supply alternatives located closer to available infrastructure. During 2018, the licensee's formal application for the issue of a subsequent 5-year term licence was submitted to DPC on 11th January, delineating a significantly reduced tenement area, but this document was later withdrawn on 7th May. Earlier, a hand-picked sample of the cleanest 'white' barite outcrop seen at Mount James had been provided to industrial supply company Sibelco for assessment, but the outcome was an expression of no interest in the material owing to it being not white enough for the intended purposes.
