Portions of the Tertiary shallow marine clastic sedimentary sequence (Loxton and Parilla sands) deposited in the central western Murray Basin within SA's Murray Mallee district have been explored for possible economic heavy mineral sand (HMS) accumulations. Prior to 2011, previous licence holder Australian Zircon completed reconnaissance RC/aircore traverse drilling of an aggregate 520 vertical open holes for a total penetration of 9609 m, at sites located primarily along road verges, within the now relinquished portions of the subject licences. In 2013, Murray Zircon drilled an additional 31 similar holes for 1161 m on the Halidon tenement only (then held as EL 5357). All of the holes were geologically logged, and were sampled over the target stratigraphic interval to submit sediment material for heavy mineral analysis where the panned and visually estimated HM content of sampled 1-metre drill cuttings intervals appeared to be anomalous. No significant HM occurrences were identified, leading to the present decision to relinquish the tested pieces of ground because they are no longer regarded as being prospective for economic accumulations of HM.
