An area in Far North SA, centred near Mount Irwin on Tieyon Station, is being explored for possible buried economic magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE deposits associated with mafic-ultramafic intrusive rocks of the Proterozoic Giles Complex. Another newly recognised target is epithermal/hydrothermal silver-copper-zinc and rare earth mineralisation that has lately been noted by DMITRE as occurring within granites of the Pitjantjatjara Supersuite. The eastern side of the tenement, comprising ~15% of the original licence area, has recently been relinquished by Woomera Exploration (WEX) in order to meet exploration expenditure compliance conditions of its multi-licence SA tenure. During its tenure of the now relinquished portion of EL 5287, WEX compiled and researched data and reports produced by the Geological Survey of South Australia and by previous explorers, and used this information to identify twelve conceptual exploration targets distributed across the four tenements comprising its Alcurra Project area. These targets were selected primarily on the basis of RC drillhole bedrock sample assay results, outcrop rock chip sample assay results, and interpreted magnetic trends defining probable buried intrusive mafic/ultramafic rocks. Because no targets were identified within the eastern portion of EL 5287, this piece of ground was chosen for relinquishment.
