A small area extending north-south between Mount Grainger and Oodla Wirra, which at its northern end surrounds the historical mine workings of the Mount Grainger Goldfield, has been explored for possible sediment-hosted gold, after the licensee used research conducted by CODES at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) to identify gold bearing target areas within the Adelaide Geosyncline which appear to have favourable structural settings. The CODES study had investigated elevated levels of gold formed within pyrite through geologic time, to estimate the ages of periods of peak gold emplacement and resultant erosion/weathering, and therefore to identify sedimentary basins which are likely to be sources of economic amounts of shed gold mineralisation. Their work done using samples from the Nackara Arc region identified strata of the Ulupa Siltstone (542–590 Ma depositional time range) as falling inside one of six time periods recognised as more prospective for the occurrence of this type of gold mineralisation. Taking evidence from world class sediment-hosted gold deposits already found around the globe, such as 962 Mt Sukhoi Log in Russia, large antiformal trap sites in this particular region were targeted because there the prospective host strata have been brought close to the surface. At Sukhoi Log the giant sediment-hosted gold resource, grading an average 2.1 g/t Au for 64 Moz of contained gold, is present in disseminated pyrite and minor pyrite-quartz veinlets in black shale, siltstone and limestone. This remobilised gold, sourced from a former gold dispersion - enriched sedimentary sequence, has become concentrated within the core of a large late Neoproterozoic anticline. Recently, the licensee's parent company DGO Gold Limited had entered into an agreement with CODES and UTAS to fund a research project in order to access the research findings and supporting database. During the first licence year, Yandan Gold Mines (Yandan) compiled and reviewed past exploration reports and data, including remote sensing data, to inform planning of its work programme. The company found that known mineralisation at the Mount Grainger Goldfield generally occurs along the western limb and in the fold closure of a steeply plunging and overturned antiform, the Mount Grainger Anticline, with its axis trending NW. Several granted mining leases and mineral claim applications, which are excluded from EL 6036, cover the known gold occurrences on the goldfield. The main mining area is located near the centre of the fold, with other minor gold workings, such as the Dustholes claims, occupying positions along the NW limb. To date, the recorded small-scale gold production from deposits of this mining field, which was discovered in 1889, is ~2116 oz mined at an average grade of 13 g/t Au. The Mount Grainger mineralisation occurs within quartz veins and stockworks hosted by an arkosic sandstone unit of the Apilla Tillite (lower Umberatana Group). The Dustholes workings tap stratabound veins within Perpuata Tillite (upper Umberatana Group). Both of these host units sit stratigraphically below the Ulupa Siltstone. No obvious geochemical anomalies were identified from Yandan's examination of the minor amounts of historic surface sampling data that had been obtained from sites either fairly close to, or else at some distance away from, the Mount Grainger Goldfield. The reported previous exploration work had produced generally low and inconsistent results from rock chip, channel sampling, costeaning and drilling. Drilling of IP targets had only intersected low grade gold. But when he tried to understand what causes the odd regionally variable distribution of gold in the rocks around Mount Grainger, Morris (2011) identified improved gold content analytical results coming from PIRSA's conduct of bulk sampling programmes when compared to similar data obtained from doing standard rock chip and drill downhole sampling, and thus inferred that there is a nuggety gold issue which may have impacted on gold exploration results obtained in the district until then. Also during the year, a structural interpretation of available open file magnetic and gravity data was conducted by Yandan’s consultants, Terra Resources Pty Ltd and Clare Geological Services Pty Ltd, and was applied to target selection. It was recognised that Yandan's Dawson Project tenements occupy a structural position in the Nackara Arc where the fold trend flexes from a N-S to a NE-SW alignment, reflecting disturbance of Delamerian fold axes. The axial plane flexure was interpreted to occur where the folds meet a pronounced NW trending magnetic lineament. In addition, features shown on magnetic images and borne out by sparse drilling records also pointed to the presence of potentially influential igneous intrusions within the project area (as magnetic lows) that could represent hydrothermal heat sources. Lastly, the Ulupa Siltstone within the Dawson Syncline displays higher than typical magnetic attenuation that it was though could possibly represent pervasive alteration. During Licence Year 2, after further considering the above interpretation and doing more background reviews of MESA's past SAEI regional bedrock drilling programme results, Yandan concluded that the potential of the project area to have world-class size, i.e. >1 Moz recoverable gold mineralisation on the scale of the Sukhoi Log system had been downgraded, however, the new research had demonstrated that the elements necessary for the development of sediment-hosted gold deposits are present. Despite acknowledging that some low priority structural targets are evident near EL 6036 associated with interpreted igneous rock bodies intruding and faults transecting prospective lithologies, observations made of the local geology during a field trip conducted by Yandan in July 2018 were disappointing, and consequently it was decided to fully surrender the licence.
