An area covering probable extensions to the Permian sediments of the southern Phillipson Trough was taken up by Southern Coal Holdings (SCH), a wholly owned subsidiary of WPG Resources Ltd, to explore for possible economic sub-bituminous coal occurrences. It was selected by the applicant to strategically complement another tenement it held, EL 4525 Robin Rise, which contains the known Penrhyn coal deposit. Only limited exploratory drilling for coal had previously been done near Perfection Well by Utah Exploration, along two drill traverses located in the east of the subject tenement area. Minor coal beds were encountered on one traverse. Other drilling of magnetic low anomalies carried out by MESA under the SASE Project included two shallow holes put in further to the west, that reported trace coal intercepts in one instance. During the first licence year, SCH made an office-based technical review of previous exploration records, and compiled data into a GIS database. This work disclosed that the Comet gold-in-calcrete prospect had been extensively drilled by Minotaur Exploration during the late 1990s, but downhole sampling had rarely returned any gold intercept values that were >100 ppb Au, so no formal gold resource was defined there. Becoming aware of this information convinced the licensee to shift its exploration focus towards gold and base metals, with coal becoming a lower priority objective. During licence Years 2 through 7, no field work was done. Plans were made to acquire IP surveys to investigate selected gold-in-calcrete anomalies for evidence of underlying auriferous sulphidic lodes within Proterozoic basement, but this work did not eventuate. Three partial relinquishments of licence ground were made in August 2014, June 2015 and October 2016, progressively reducing the area held from 628 to 342 square km. On 30/7/2018, SCH's parent WPG Resources Limited, after making unsuccessful attempts to recapitalise their business or restructure their operations, and with the likelihood that the company would become insolvent, appointed Ernst and Young as Voluntary Administrators. On 8/8/2018, RSM Australia Partners were appointed as Receivers and Managers. The bankruptcy avoidance process remains ongoing, but from their initial assessment of the WPG assets the Administrators decided not to renew tenure for EL 5995, and it was allowed to lapse.
