  1. INTRODUCTION The Muryarai prospect in the Eastern Officer Basin was originally detected as an aeromagnetic anomaly and confirmed by surveys in 1966 and 1967 as a seismic and gravity closure. In the winter of 1968 it was drilled to a TD of 2900m by the Tenement holders of that time Conoco (operator), Exoil, Transoil, and Australian Sun Oil Co. The well was abandoned without finding a reservoir in the deeper part of the hole. SD(A)'s interest in the Officer Basin was based upon the geological similarity which was hought to exist between this basin and the Amadeus Basin with its substantial reserves, mostly of gas, and some oil. It was suggested that a prospective Ordovician sequence could be present below total depth of Munyarai-1. A farmin agreement was concluded with the Oilmin Group in May 1974, under which SD(A) can earn a 49% participating working interest in its Petroleum Exploration License No.12 (South Australia) by drilling a well to a minimum depth of 14,000feet or prior economic basement by December 1975 or a later date as may be approved by the South Australian Minister of Mines and agreed to by the Oilmin Group. The Munyarai prospect was the best defined structure in the Officer Basin. The seismic survey carried out by SD(A) in 1974 confirmed the prospect as a closed structure and also provided a regional tie line with outcrops at the rim of the basin. Within 6 months of the survey completion (27th May 1975) Shell has to decide whether it wants to terminate the farmin arrangement and earn no interest at all or whether it wants to commit itself to drill a well at sole costs.
