Reconnaissance exploration for possible Cainozoic sedimentary uranium deposits across part of central Eyre Peninsula sought to remotely map any erosional depressions in the buried basement surface prior to drilling interpreted palaeochannel sandstone bodies. A preliminary survey of ground water chemistry gave only background (< 5 ppb) uranium readings from mostly abandoned water wells. A trial series of aerial scintillometer passes made over the eastern part of the licence area did not seem to be able to see through the cover, so it was decided to proceed directly to the drilling phase. A number of rotary drillhole traverses were completed in October-November 1970, totalling 26 holes for 3582 feet penetration. Eight of the holes drilled through what were interpreted to be Tertiary palaeochannel sands, and one small area, located about 15 miles north-west of Darke Peak, was found to contain a thin radioactive sand section lying about 180 feet below the ground surface. The measured peak radiometric log value of 2180 API units corresponds to an equivalent radioactive ore grade of 0.05% U3O8. The best such ore intersections, in holes DP24 and DP30, lie close to the eastern boundary of the Hambidge National Park. Thick sections of kaolin-rich weathered basement were also met with close to the surface in two holes drilled near Caralue Bluff (DP13 and DP14). Clay quality analyses were done on selected samples, the results of which suggested that perhaps the occurrence could contain kaolin of a grade high enought to meet the requirements of paper-filling applications. Because of the cost and difficulty of using drilling to detect prospective palaeochannel sediments, and the proximity of the National Park, it was decided to try out a close-spaced gravity survey as a means of delineating the individual stream channels that apparently form part of a sinuous channel system. 165 gravity stations were read in April 1971, but this work only revealed many wide fluctuations of the local gravity field over short distances, which is attributed to marked density differences within the basement rocks. Any small changes in gravity response which might be due to variations in thickness of the Cainozoic cover are thus completely masked.
