As part of a regional search for possible economic deposits of sedimentary uranium in the central Eyre Peninsula region, a reconnaissance open hole rotary drilling programme (8 holes for 1715 feet) was undertaken in November 1970 along the eastern edge of the Polda Basin tectonic downwarp. A sedimentary section of 410 feet maximum thickness was encountered, and palynological studies of drill cuttings recovered from the base of this gave an Early Eocene biostratigraphic age. Minor anomalous gamma log radioactivity was recorded in several of the drillholes, and four drill cuttings samples from holes L4 and L7 were assayed for uranium and thorium (maximum value 10 ppm U3O8 from the depth interval 105-115 feet in hole L4). In view of the poor results obtained by the reconnaissance drilling, and the difficulty experienced in selecting drilling targets where geophysical and geochemical methods did not work successfully, it was decided that incurring additional expenditure on further drilling elsewhere in the licence could not be justified.
