Exploration for possible buried sedimentary uranium deposits in the west of the Lake Frome Embayment area was prompted by recent such discoveries made in the north (at Beverley) and north-east (at Billeroo). A scout programme of open hole rotary drilling (12 holes, total 5836 feet) was undertaken to log the Cainozoic sedimentary succession and to obtain samples for radiometric and chemical analysis. The drilling depth limit of 525 feet was decided with reference to the likely maximum depth for economic open pit mining of sedimentary uranium ore. The drilling and gamma logging yielded disappointing results, with but few uniformly less than 3 times background radioactivity peaks being detected, all coming from a sequence of unprospective impermeable muds and silts. One geochemically trace U anomaly (2 ppm) gave an exceptional 9 times background kick in hole WLF11 over the depth interval 492-494 feet in Cretaceous clays, however this occurrence was discounted on the assay result.
