EL 5639, centred ~210 km north-west of Ceduna, was acquired by Iluka’s New Commodities team in 2015 as part of its strategy to explore for possible Voiseys Bay style magmatic nickel, copper and platinum group metallic mineralisation which might be hosted in buried Proterozoic mafic/ultramafic layered intrusive complexes that are associated with the western margin of the Gawler Craton. A focus was placed on mafic intrusions which during their emplacement appeared to have experienced magmatic sulphur saturation, a key prospectivity indicator, where such evidence had been gained from historical percussion drilling. However, prioritisation of other exploration targets on Iluka's Eucla Basin Project large land tenure resulted in no drilling being undertaken on EL 5639 by the time that the New Commodities team was disbanded in December 2016. Prior to that, across a number of Iluka tenements in the region of interest, seven geophysical surveys had been undertaken which included airborne magnetic/radiometric plus ground based electromagnetic (both MLTEM and FLTEM surveys) and gravity surveys. Air core and reverse circulation drilling programs addressing Cu-Ni-PGE targets were also undertaken by Iluka elsewhere than on the subject licence during this 2014-2016 period, with a total of 452 holes for 23,819 m drilled.
