A large area centred ~38 km east-northeast of Kingoonya is being explored for possible economic metallic mineralisation that may have formed in buried Proterozoic volcanic and plutonic basement rocks that are thought to lie at a shallowest depth of around 700 m to 1 km. The first licence year was mainly taken up with doing logistical preparations and data reviews. FMG’s opinion is that the licence area harbours very few geophysical anomalies of interest, but this may be a false impression induced by the masking effects of the thick cover and the strong magnetic overprint arising from the pervasive dyke swarm of the Gairdner Dolerite. The company's reprocessing and subsequent geophysical modelling of the available data has caused somewhat of a rethink in regards to the assumptions reached by the previous explorers, because now a more defined gravity anomaly has been identified within the response generated by the dyke swarm. This 2.5 mGal gravity anomaly is non-magnetic, and appears to be related to NW-SE and E-W trending structures. It models as a Prominent Hill - shaped body 4.7 km long x 300 m wide which lies at 800 m depth. Gravity modelling of the numerous magnetic dykes has concluded that while the dykes do impart a 0.5 to 1 mGal gravity anomaly purely of themselves, a further 2.5 mGal of gravity response remains unaccounted for. The scenario of thickening of the dykes with increasing depth to form a greater mass, thereby generating this overall gravity anomaly, was rejected by FMG since it fails the magnetic data modelling results. Because of the encouraging possibility of having identified actual signal from a mineralised dense body located beneath the uppermost dolerite dykes that have intruded within the Pandurra Formation, an airborne gravity survey will be completed over the subject licence area in the near future to assist in better defining future drill targets.
