A large area centred ~20 km east-northeast of Port Germein, covering ground at the southern end of the Flinders Ranges, has been explored for possible altered sediment - hosted gold deposits of disseminated, Carlin style which are genetically associated with hot, basement interacting dispersive hydrothermal fluids. To try to find these deposits, licensee Yandan Gold Mines (Yandan) is targeting siltstone lithologies in prospective sedimentary units that are close to known gold workings and occur in structurally complex settings, and has utilised research conducted by CODES at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) to identify such strata and fertile places within the Adelaide Geosyncline orogenic setting. The genetic model holds that the fine grained gold now seen within these clastic units is positioned within remnant, still abundant interstitial organic matter and diagenetic pyrite that are believed to be sourced from what was gold-enriched ocean water during their time of deposition. This gold has since then become re-located and often also concentrated to ore grades by the pervasive action of hydrothermal, structural or magmatic processes. The Bangor licence was taken up because a review of the airborne magnetic data for the Wirrabara region identified favourable structural features (folds) in fertile Sturtian to Marinoan stratigraphic units. An identified large synclinal fold was then prioritised in relation to its proximity to known gold mineralisation. The main prospective siltstone strata addressed were those in and near the basal contact of the Tapley Hill Formation with the Appila Tillite. During the single year of tenure of this ground, 81 reconnaissance soil geochemical samples were collected at ~400 m intervals along public roads or tracks and laboratory analysed by partial leach methods for 54 assorted mobile metal ions (MMI). In addition, 2 rock chip geochemical samples were collected from an abandoned quarry site. Although the results of the soil and rock chip sampling were sufficiently positive to warrant follow-up exploration activities, highlighting both gold and base metal anomalism in the vicinity of the historic Charlton copper workings, Yandan chose to fully surrender EL 6237 due to recognising what the company considered to be insurmountable land access issues.
