An area centred ~120 km south-southeast of Coober Pedy is being explored for possible economic metallic mineralisation that may have formed in >800 m deeply buried Proterozoic to Archaean volcanic and metamorphic basement rocks, or also within the overlying younger Cariewerloo Basin sediments. To date no drillhole in the region has penetrated all the way through the fill of this basin, so the nature of the underlying older basement rocks is unknown. The area lies adjacent to but south-east of the Bulgunnia Fault, across which, to the north-west, the Archaean Mulgathing Complex crops out and hosts the iron formation of the Hawks Nest prospect. The first licence year was mainly taken up with doing logistical preparations and data reviews. FMG’s opinion is that the licence area overlies a geologically varied terrain having good potential to contain mineralisation. However, the company's initial assessment of relevant publically available data did not reveal any interesting geophysical anomalies. It would appear that the thickness of cover is significant, therefore a more detailed examination of existing geophysical datasets will be undertaken to try to define targets lying at depth.
