149 square km or ~31% of the former area of EL 5864, which is centred ~105 km south-southwest of Moomba, have been relinquished. The exploration target being investigated on this licence, which is located along the central section of the Strzelecki Track, is clean sands of Quaternary age that may have formed within fluvial or aeolian depositional environments. To provide extractive material suitable for road-building purposes, surface or near surface sand resources situated above the water table and existing in environmentally and socially acceptable (for mining) areas are sought. It is envisaged that the sand may also have application in the nearby Cooper Basin region for downhole injection as a proppant in the hydraulic fracturing of natural gas reservoirs. On the now relinquished portion of ground, one soil sample (S034) was collected from a sand dune, and one hand-auger hole (PG05) was drilled. The soil sample was not tested because qualitative aspects of its sedimentary petrology (mineralogy, grain size and grain shape) indicated that it would not be suitable to incorporate in roadbase construction. The auger hole, completed at 6 m depth, sampled fine to medium grained and sub-rounded to rounded fluvial sand of the Yandruwantha Sand which occurs below 2.5 m depth. 11 samples of the sand were laboratory tested during November 2017 - February 2018 to determine their grainsize distribution via sieve analysis, plus grain crush resistance and sphericity and roundness parameters.
