Investigations previously carried out by Pechiney had indicated the presence of substantial reserves of kaolin clays in the Kelly Tank and Bunora - Balumbah areas located near and to the south of Kimba, which might have a potential for paper-coating applications. Pacminex farmed-into the tenement to assess whether sufficient material of an economic grade and quality exists for commercial development. Areas of well-developed and exposed kaolinization in Proterozoic metamorphic bedrock were excavated by Pacminex to obtain bulk samples for testing, with several bulldozer-dug trenches centred on the original Pechiney discovery drillholes. Only 2 of five attempted trenches, over holes KT3 and BB35, were able to be dug successfully to 20 feet depth, and 89 bulk channel samples of between 40 and 60 lbs each were taken from them and from shallower levels in two other trenches (KT9 and BB25). These samples were sent to Amdel for preliminary mineralogical testing. It was found that the amount of economically-significant minus 300 mesh material resulting from the wet separation of 33 samples taken from trench KT3 varied between 29% and 62.6% by weight. Reflectivity (brightness) of the whitest-appearing clay, found in 9 of the samples, ranged from 86% to 96%, which is well above minimum requirements. The minus 2 micron fraction, which is the clay deemed most suitable for paper coating as distinct from paper filling, was separated from the minus 300 mesh material of the single 'whitest' clay sample. The viscosity of this fraction at 68% solids was determined as 1.3 poise, which is regarded as an acceptable value for a coating clay. Exploratory auger drilling to a maximum depth of 30 feet was carried out in the area between Kelly Tank and Bunora (27 holes in 7 localities), and significant kaolin was found in 15 of the holes at 3 localities. A more probing series of laboratory tests have been planned to fully evaluate all 89 bulk samples that were recovered from the trenching, and this work is now in progress.
