Exploration for possible sedimentary uranium deposits formed within the Cainozoic basin located south-west of the Darke Range on central Eyre Peninsula has entailed reconnaissance groundwater sampling, acquisition of part of a regional aerial radioactivity survey, and the drilling of 18 rotary drillholes totalling 4022 feet. The former two approaches proved to be inconclusive, while the results of the drilling were very disappointing. Checking of weak radiometric prospects between previous Kerr-McGee drillholes near Tuckey found only poor U mineralisation (log-estimated maximum grade 0.012% eU3O8) mainly associated with lignite, and it appears that the requisite well-developed sand beds are lacking in the overall Tertiary sequence; likewise, more drilling undertaken west and south-west of Konanda revealed a locally thick but argillaceous Tertiary section.
