Two adjoining large licences located in the Eringa Trough area ~120-170 km north-east of Marla, covering ground overlying the south-western end of the Pedirka Basin adjacent to the SA-NT state border, were taken up in order to evaluate the coal potential of the wholly buried Permian Purni Formation, which contains known coal seams that are likely to be correlatives of Permian coal measures found in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. To date, Tri-Star had done extensive geological mapping of the Pedirka Basin in the Northern Territory, and believed that similar prospective features to those recognised there may extend into the southern area of the basin in South Australia. Besides coal, there may be potential for discovering other economic mineral deposits. During the seven year long tenure of the subject licences, work done towards the project aim of cross-border development of Purni Formation coal resources was generally focussed elsewhere, on the company's licence areas in the Northern Territory, where most of the required data exists and are available. Data from South Australia originating from the ELs 5446/6459 and 5447/6460 areas (geographically named Pedirka Basin nos 2 and 3) were incorporated where possible. These data were subjected by Tri-Star to intensive desktop studies, which ultimately indicated that the original coal target within the Purni Formation would be economically unviable because of its 300 m to 500 m depth of occurrence within the subject EL areas. A review of Tri-Star’s adjacent Northern Territory acreage indicated that there the known coal resource was also uneconomic, despite the Purni Formation being shallower and thicker than in the Anderson Range region. Therefore, the Eringa Trough prospectivity for Permian coal within South Australia was now perceived to be greatly reduced. No on-ground work was performed as had been originally planned for 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic which prevented Tri-Star from completing its planned drilling program. The pandemic resulted in border crossing restrictions and a need for compliance with the Commonwealth and State Governments' mandate to cancel all non-essential activity. In 2021, Tri-Star switched focus to applying an exclusively minerals-based exploration approach across the Anderson Range Project area. The result of making this minerals prospectivity assessment was the decision to retain a portion of EL 6458 where a prospective magnetic anomaly was identified, but to fully surrender the two remaining ELs – 6459 and 6460 – plus the company's three Anderson Range ELA areas located to the east of the existing licence areas.
