85 samples of potential mineral deposit- related surface ironstones (68 copper gossans, 6 lead-zinc gossans and 11 false gossans) were analysed chemically and examined mineragraphically in polished section to try to determine geological parameters which can be used to positively distinguish such gossans during exploration for new mineral discoveries in South Australia. Later work involved geostatistical investigations of the geochemical data, whole rock X-ray diffraction analysis of 20 selected specimens, and an electron microprobe determination of the copper distribution between and within secondary iron oxide phases of boxworks and pseudomorphs in 14 selected copper gossans.
