The major part of the subject 134 square km total area of tenement ground relinquished from EL 5184 on 23/9/2017 contains the Michael Hills copper prospect (Area 11). A large portion of the remainder of the surrendered ground, in a separate block lying to the east, had been excluded from ground-based exploration by the traditional owners during heritage surveys carried out in the surrounding areas prior to the grant of EL 5184. Work that was possible for Austral Nickel to undertake was an airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey which was carried out in early 2012 on EL 3932, precursor to EL 5184. Unfortunately, permission to undertake ground truthing and sampling of a very high priority AEM anomaly identified north of Michael Hills was not given by the traditional owners due to its proximity to a very significant heritage site. However, the traditional owners did permit the JV partners to perform an anomaly truthing ground EM survey, soil sampling (21 samples) and a single fully diamond cored drillhole test (MDDD0001) of a much lower priority AEM anomaly located about 10 km east of the Michael Hills prospect in gneissic terraine on the Ilitjata Homelands. No base metal or precious metal anomalism was returned in assaying of 24 core samples from the drillhole, and no EM anomalism is associated with surface indications of copper mineralisation at the Michael Hills copper occurrence. Furthermore, apart from granting said access to the Ilitjata Homelands, the traditional owners did not give permission for ground access to the remainder of southern part of the tenement located immediately east of the Michael Hills prospect and south of Mount Davies. Consequently, the justification for relinquishing tenure over these particular areas was based on poor exploration outcomes and restricted access.
