Exploration licence 5688 forms part of Western Areas’ Nullarbor Project, in conjunction with an adjacent area to the south being sought under licence application ELA 2014/252. It covers part of the Fowler Domain, which is interpreted as a Proterozoic aged mobile belt on the western margin of the Gawler Craton. Western Areas Limited (WSA) considers that this domain, which is known to contain mafic-ultramafic intrusive rocks, may have significant potential for intrusion related nickel-copper sulphides and PGE mineralisation, which tend to form in a craton-boundary setting, such as that of the Thompson Nickel Belt in Canada, and lately also, that of the Fraser Range belt in south-east Western Australia. Initially, the start of project on-ground activities was delayed due to involvement in lengthy negotiations regarding gaining access to the Yalata Aboriginal Reserve, but these issues were eventually resolved. Afterwards, in May 2016, an orientation gravity survey (83 stations) was read along a single east-west traverse. Office based desktop studies focused on establishing the likely depth to basement, to inform the planning of drilling. Exploration targets were selected where gravity and magnetic anomalies coincide. During the second licence year, no fieldwork was completed. Subject to the adoption of the tenements into the Part 9B of the Native Title Agreement, on ground work is scheduled to commence in 2018. Ongoing program planning and assessment has defined targets and areas of interest for future work programs. No work was completed during the third and forth licence years. ... In 2022, WSA was acquired by IGO Limited and became a fully owned subsidiary of the latter. Exploration Licence 6617 (formally EL 5688) surrender was entered into the Mining Register 20/06/20214. The tenement has been assessed for the potential for magmatic nickel sulphides and oxide nickel, along with other commodities of interest to IGO. The analysis of these results by IGO has indicated that the depth of cover prohibits effective exploration for the Ni target commodities.
