IGO Ltd’s (IGO) Copper Coast Project is located along the eastern Spencer Gulf and is centred around Port Pirie. It sits along the eastern margin of the Gawler Craton and covers Proterozoic rocks of the Stuart Shelf, Torrens Hinge Zone, and Adelaide Rift Complex, which form part of the Adelaide Superbasin. IGO is of the opinion that its Copper Coast Project represents a significant belt-scale opportunity to discover and develop a sediment-hosted copper deposit, like the giant Kamoa-Kakula deposit on the margin of the Central African Copperbelt. Copper mineralisation (±lead-zinc) within the Adelaide Superbasin is commonly associated with an unconformity at the base of Neoproterozoic sequences where they overlie Mesoproterozoic “red beds” – in particular, where there is significant relief on the palaeo-topographic surface on which the Neoproterozoic sediments were deposited. Sediment-hosted copper mineralisation occurs when permeable, oxidised (clastic) sediments are overlain by reduced (marine / lacustrine) sediments and chemical precipitation occurs at the redox boundary between the two. IGO believes that understanding 3D basin architecture is key to discovering sediment-hosted copper deposits. It was hoped that the 2D seismic survey that was co-funded through the Accelerated Discovery Initiative (ADI) would address a knowledge gap and improve the companies understanding of the 3D basin architecture by assisting in the mapping of the palaeo-topographic land surface and the distribution and thickness of key lithostratigraphic units in the project area, along with any structures identified. These factors will be used to direct future exploration targets. HiSeis were contracted by IGO to complete the 2D seismic survey, with 2 traverses completed in August 2022 - one along Germein Gorge Road in the north of the project area, and one along Collinsfield Road in the south of the project area. The survey was designed to traverse interpreted basin edges to gain a regional / project scale understanding of 3D basin architecture and the distribution, thickness, and depth of key lithostratigraphic units and structures. A total of 58.2 line-km was surveyed, with 37.4 line-km completed in the north and 20.8 line-km in the south. Data was acquired using 2 Vibroseis source vehicles, utilising the flip-flop sweep technique, with a nominal source spacing of 20 m and receiver spacing of 10 m. The 2D seismic survey successfully traversed interpreted basin edges and provided significant insight into the regional / project scale understanding of 3D basin architecture and the distribution, thickness and depth of key lithostratigraphic units and structures.
