In 2022 SIMEC Mining/Onesteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd successfully applied for up to $270,000 of funding through the South Australian Government’s Accelerated Discovery Initiative (ADI) program. The company proposed to undertake RC and diamond drilling at their Katunga and Iron Chieftain West prospects in the Middleback Ranges to ascertain the gross geometry, thickness, mineralogy, and stratigraphy of magnetite banded iron formations (BIF). Both prospects present as large-scale high amplitude regional magnetic anomalies associated with magnetite bearing BIF. Due to land access and rig availability issues, drilling was only completed at the Chieftain West prospect. The Iron Chieftain West prospect is 45 km southwest of Whyalla within the southern Middleback Ranges. The prospect sits on the western side of the Iron Chieftain Ridge immediately west of the Iron Chieftain deposit that was mined for high-grade hematite-goethite mineralisation. A total of 6 RC holes for 2580 m and a single stratigraphic diamond cored hole for 887.9 m was completed at Chieftain West. Stratigraphic diamond hole CW129RD intersected over 500 m of magnetite-bearing iron formation as well as the entire Middleback Range Hutchison Group stratigraphic unit sequence ending within the interpreted Archaean basement rock. The diamond hole was located to best test all the stratigraphic units, while the RC holes were located to delineate the southern contact of the Cook Gap Schist. Half core from hole CW2129RD was sent to the South Australian Drill Core Library for Hylogger scanning and storage while the reaming half core was submitted for laboratory XRF analysis along with RC samples (at the time of reporting only the major oxide results for the diamond hole had been received). Borehole Wireline were engaged to conduct acoustic televiewer and density logging of CW129RD, for structure and density investigations. Hole CW129RD intersected a potential unconformity between the Cook Gap Schist and the Middleback Ranges Iron Formation, it is hoped that samples of the overlying Cook Gap Schist and Meta-pelitic basal sequence may provide zircons that would allow for detailed geochronological studies to provide a definitive age for the Middleback Range stratigraphy for the Hutchinson Group.
