In an area located approximately 7 to 20 miles north of Orroroo, a number of previously worked old small barite and copper prospects were examined in detail, and recommendations were made for additional work to be done, e.g. bulldozer trenching, soil sampling, SP surveying and percussion drilling, to assess their potential in the subsurface. Some of this work was begun during the subject licence term, and preliminary results are described. Bulldozer trenching of the two main barite veins at the Horseshoe prospect, 12 miles north of Orroroo, did not disclose inferred buried extensions to the outcrops originally worked. Remaining ore reserves, estimated by measuring the extent of barite exposures, do not exceed 5000 tons. Reconnaissance heavy mineral stream sediment sampling conducted across the range of hills containing this prospect and also the larger Oladdie barite deposit confirmed that the minus 420 mesh sample collection and tetrabromoethane heavy liquid separation method could detect barite fines shed from the veins as far as one mile downstream, but the exercise did not reveal any new barite occurrences. Two lens-shaped outcrops of low grade manganese oxides occur within dolomitic siltstone beds 2.2 miles east-southeast of Eurelia, and appear to be related to a shear zone extending northwards from an adjacent diapiric breccia mass. Percussion drilling of the lenses showed that they are almost vertical, 10 feet wide by 100 feet long bodies with a minimum depth extent of 60 feet. Examination of the Eurelia copper prospect has indicated a mineralised outcrop pattern at least 1.5 miles long that defines a synclinal structure plunging shallowly to the south, which may have a faulted eastern margin.
