Inspection of an area showing diapiric and fault disturbance within upper Adelaidean and Lower Cambrian metasediments in the vicinity of Mount Neville sought to find barite deposits of sufficiently high grade and quantity to resemble those of the Oraparinna mine area, which occupies a similar structural and stratigraphic setting. Detailed geological mapping of photo-interpreted fault structures resulted in the discovery of two small, 2 to 4 foot - wide barite veins, plus several quartz and calcite veins. Neither barite occurrence was considered to be large enough to warrant further investigation. A more than eight mile - long gossan in the Lower Cambrian sediments was selectively drilled (by 4 percussion/diamond holes for a total penetration of 1035 feet, including 520 feet cored) and was shown by drill core sample petrographic examinations to have formed on a pyritic limestone horizon. Drilling of a zinc - anomalous section within it proved that the gossan extends to a vertical depth of 250 feet, at which depth trace microscopic native copper and pyrite is present. A deeper subsequent drillhole found that this apparently supergene - mineralised horizon is faulted off. Due to the lack of success in finding economic mineralisation, it was decided to surrender tenure.
