In a search for possible roll-front type secondary uranium deposits emplaced in piedmont alluvial sediments over an area adjacent to the north-western edge of the Mount Painter Block, the licensees drilled 6 scout vertical rotary holes totalling 2151 feet 9 inches to penetrate likely carbonaceous clastic host rocks within the area's Cretaceous and Tertiary sequence. The expected clastics were largely missing from the cover sequence, whereas predominantly fine clays and mudstones were found to be overlying the Precambrian basement. However, a trace of uranium mineralisation was detected from a radiometric log run across the depth interval 25-75 feet in drill hole 4 on Taylor Creek (maximum 140 counts per second). The local groundwaters in 19 existing water bores were also sampled and analysed for dissolved uranium, and 5 of the bores returned 45 ppb U (4 times background) or more (Apollinaris Well, Sawmill Bore, Taylor Limestone Well, Wilkowie Well, Barilla Bore). Known subeconomic base metal sulphide occurrences within the Wilpena Group at a number of old Pb-Ag-(Cu) workings were also examined, but no significant mineralised lodes were seen.
