Appraisal of the historic Spring Creek copper mine area, located approximately 8 miles south-southeast of the township of Wilmington, commenced with an IP survey of the immediate mine site, where the lode outcrops over some 20 feet in weathered pyritic shale on the bank of a major creek, and limited soil and stream sediment sampling of the surrounding drainage system. No base metal anomalism was found in the creeks sampled. A north-south elongate IP anomaly was detected underneath the old workings, of sufficient promise to warrant the drilling of three angled diamond drillholes to depths of nearly 600 feet, designed to intersect the lode where the effects of weathering and supergene alteration might be less. This drilling was successful in the two cored holes completed by March 1970 (for a total penetration of 936 feet 8 inches), which intersected lode material containing pyrite and chalcopyrite, but still with a predominance of secondary enveloping cuprite, native copper and some copper carbonates. The lode appears to maintain a constant true width of about 70 feet going deeper, and was probably hydrothermally emplaced. More drilling and geological information on ore grade variation and emplacement controls is needed before any estimate of the remaining copper ore reserves can be made.
