An evaluation of the commercial potential of known gypsum, salt and silica sand occurrences located within coastal dunes and palaeo-lakeshore terraces 15 km north-east of Venus Bay on Eyre Peninsula initially comprised aerial photographic interpretation, a ground geological reconnaissance, the digging of shallow pits, hand and power auger sampling (5 + 12 holes for 69 m) of four dunes and a dry lakebed, and the recovery of one 50 kg bulk sample. The gypsum is present as gypsite and gypsarenite that has accumulated into smooth low relief dune-like ridges formed around the now dried-out lake. In contrast to the large pre-drilling inferred tonnage of gypsum (ca. 5 Mt) deduced from the surface outcrop of gypsite, potential in-place calculated mineral reserves of only about 851,300 tonnes grading on average 83.7% gypsum at a 70% cutoff were outlined by the shallow drilling. Laboratory analyses of auger cuttings samples and later calcining tests performed on the bulk sample indicated that the un-beneficiated material is unsuitable for plaster manufacture owing to a significant content of calcium carbonate (average 9.6%), sodium chloride (0.18%) and acid insoluble silica (4.4%). Due to the demostrated sub-economic size of the Chadee Curra Plains deposits, and because the gypsum quality has been shown to be inferior to that present on the company's other nearby ELs 1304 (Lakes Greenly and Malata) and 1305 (Kyancutta), it was decided to surrender the subject licence area.
