SALT PROJECT. Market research was carried out on utilizing salt from Lake Torrens and Point Paterson for the production of soda ash or caustic soda in SA, or for salt export. The Dow Chemical Co. has confirmed its continuing interest in Lake Torrens brine as the source of salt for the proposed Redcliff Petrochemical Project. Underground sources of brine were also investigated during drilling for base metals. BASE METALS PROJECT. Detailed low level airborne magnetic and radiometric, ground gravity and topographic surveys were completed, and 4 stratigraphic percussion holes totalling 1494 m were drilled near Beda Hill and Sandy Point to test resulting geophysical anomalies. Experimental reflection seismic surveying, and computer analysis of the airborne magnetic data, were initiated but not completed. Anomalously high but subeconomic concentrations of copper, lead and zinc were found in volcanic rocks (including a basalt - the possible source) in hole BDH2 and in the Whyalla Sandstone in BDH3.
