The principal target of ongoing exploration in the southern Lake Torrens region was a possible buried, large, high-grade base and precious metal deposit lying within the pre- Pandurra Formation basement. After completing the drilling of DDH YAD1 at Yadlamalka early in 1982, and also acquiring a small ground gravity survey there, a synthesis and review of all Stuart Shelf data was carried out. A lithogeochemical study of acid volcanic rocks encountered at the bottom of several recent deep drillholes showed that all of them could be correlated with a part of the basement volcanic section intersected at Mount Gunson. The barium concentration was elevated in several holes, but anomalous mineralisation was not detected. A thermoluminescence study of quartz grains in the Pandurra Fm was undertaken. The linear magnetic anomaly at Yadlamalka was interpreted as being due to a shallow, dyke - like body intruding the Adelaidean strata. After conducting some ground magnetic surveys, stratigraphic hole YAD2 was drilled to test this interpretation. It intersected flat lying or shallowly east dipping Beda Volcanics at a depth of 192 m. Elevated base metal values were present at the unconformable breccia - regolith contact between the Beda Volcanics and overlying lower Burra Group siltstones, but were not considered worthy of further investigation.
