A large area of the eastern Eyre Peninsula was taken up to test the potential of this region for hosting possible stratabound uranium deposits of Rum Jungle (Northern Territory) type. Following the conduct of a regional aerial radiometric survey, plus subsequent ground follow-up and confirmation of promising radioactivity highs by geophysical and geochemical tests, 13 diamond holes totalling 1944 feet were drilled on areas of anomalous radiation, seeking primary uranium occurrences in Precambrian basement rocks. In addition, 72 rotary holes totalling 11,230 feet (of which 2 holes were partially cored) were drilled across the watershed of the Driver River to test buried Tertiary sediments for uranium which might be a source for the anomalous radon previously detected in riverbed muds by the SADM. It was quickly concluded, from ground truthing of anomalies by a consultant geologist, that abundant feldspars in gneissic basement lithologies were responsible for most of the airborne radiometric anomalies. It appears that uranium mineralisation in the basement rocks is not stratigraphically controlled, but occurs in fault breccias and shear zones with weak sulphide mineralisation. Assays of diamond drill cores showed that the anomalous uranium and thorium content decreases with depth. At the Driver River, where strong radiometric anomalies were seen emanating from Recent and Tertiary sediments, only trace quantities of uranium (to 0.029% U3O8) were detected by coring the rotary drillholes having the best downhole gamma log response. A thin interval of radiation primarily caused by thorium was found to occur in the cored Tertiary sediments at the base of the oxidised zone. Due to the lack of indications of economic mineralisation, both of the tenements were relinquished.
