Past beneficiation studies on the unusual Crocker Well absite - brannerite ore assemblage have been researched for the benefit of Esso Minerals. It appears that the Crocker Well ore responded favourably to flotation. Concentration ratios in the range 20 to 40:1 were achieved, with recoveries ranging from 80% (low grade ore) to 95% (high grade ore). Recovery by heavy media separation was less effective. In general the Crocker Well flotation concentrates gave similar leachate U3O8 extraction levels to those yielded by the leaching conditions applied to the leaching of Radium Hill concentrates at Port Pirie. The sulphuric acid leaching process requires a relatively high acid addition, approximately 400 kg H2SO4/tonne concentrate, in order to give extractions of around 90%. Recovery of the uranium from solution should be readily achieved in the present tertiary amine solvent extraction systems. Solids-liquid separation characteristics of the leached slurries were not examined in detail in the earlier work, although several comments were made suggesting poor separation characteristics, particularly with concentrates produced without prior removal of micaceous material. The range and effectiveness of synthetic flocculants now being marketed is ever increasing, and some improvement in separation characteristics could be expected by suitable application of these materials.
