In a search for possible buried kimberlite intrusions that may source authenticated historical diamond finds at the Echunga gold diggings, CRAE drilled 3 vertical percussion holes (total penetration 288 m) on 3 selected magnetic anomalies out of 30 which were identified by the company as having kimberlite traits, following the conduct of ground magnetic surveys to confirm their positions. The drillholes intersected disseminated pyrite and pyrrhotite in Torrensian shales and slates, explaining the geophysical anomalism. Rock chip sampling of the shales gave low trace metal assay values. Overlying gold and diamond-bearing Tertiary to Recent creek gravel deposits were sampled for heavy mineral analysis (15 samples collected), and were shown to contain no definitive kimberlitic indicators. A few chromites encountered in them have a non-kimberlitic source, while the more abundant staurolite and kyanite grains found within the basal Tertiary conglomerates indicate that a lower amphibolite facies metamorphic source area for these detrital sediments could lie somewhere to the east. Two historic macro-diamond crystal specimens presently held by SADME were examined by CRAE and described in an interim report written by the company prior to it starting work on the subject licence.
