Continuing investigation of the sedimentary uranium potential of the Tertiary Warrior Palaeochannel, in an area 40 km west of Tarcoola, initially comprised undertaking a test radon emanometry survey over a site of known uraniferous roll-front deposition, which yielded very good results, including informative discrimination of alpha radiation responses from radon and thoron daughters present in soil gas samples. Additional exploratory radon detection was then done over other parts of the Warrior channel, and promising anomalies were followed-up by open hole rotary and core drilling (3 holes for 153.5 m, including 55 m of coring). Only weak uranium mineralisation was disclosed, predominantly below the standing water level in the aquifer sands; these sands, from core sample analyses, were shown to be almost impermeable and thus not amenable to solution mining. Detailed 1:5000 scale geological mapping and structural studies, plus petrographic determinations of metamorphosed outcrop, grid-based geochemical (rock chip, soil and stream sediment) sampling, and ground radiometric, magnetic and IP surveys, were later undertaken to investigate the gold and uranium potential of the Middle Proterozoic Fabian Quartzite Member near Malbooma Siding, above the unconformity with Archaean basement. Variable depth vertical percussion drilling and geophysical logging (10 holes totalling 882 m) of anticlinal fold axial breccia zones with intense quartz veining, in part intruded by Hiltaba Suite granite dykes near the Kychering gold mine, disclosed no significant uranium, copper or gold values. It was concluded that very minor gold mineralisation occurs in structurally controlled milky quartz veins within the Fabian Quartzite at Malbooma, and is often near to pyritic and graphitic metasiltstones seen in this unit.
