Pioneer exploration for possible stratabound base metal deposits that have a facies relationship to metamorphic iron deposits, which was carried out in the Cootra area, located 20 km east south-east of Warramboo on central Eyre Peninsula, has including an initial low-level aeromagnetic survey, then ground reconnaissance gravity, magnetic and IP surveys, surface and subsurface bedrock geochemical sampling and petrographic determinations, and the drilling of 139 holes (76 auger, 44 rotary airblast percussion and 7 diamond) plus assaying of 868 drill core samples for base and precious metals. The drilling demonstrated that most of the targeted magnetic anomalies are probably due to increased magnetite contents developed locally within barren amphibolitic and mafic granulite gneissic rocks. However, weak, to approximately 0.17% WO3, banded disseminated tungsten (scheelite) mineralisation was encountered over an 18 m thick but narrow interval below 81 m depth in retrogressed mafic granulites within DDH C1 drill core at Meaney's prospect (best mineralised intercept 3.76 m with ultraviolet fluorescence), with trace similar mineralisation encountered in follow-up diamond holes C2 and C7. This inferred stratiform, chemical sedimentary mineral occurrence still has potential, although follow-up sampling of weathered bedrock and kaolinitic saprock in nearby RAB and auger holes failed to yield anomalous values. No accompanying molybdenum, rare earth or uranium anomalies were detected in the bedrock. In a discussion of likely mineralisation models, comparisons were made with stratiform ores found in the Willyama Block and also near Felbartel in Austria.
