After a regional review of the absorbent clay mineral potential of known palygorskite and attapulgite - bearing Middle Tertiary palaeochannel sediments in an area centred 110 km south-west of Coober Pedy, a possibly economic partly-exposed attapulgite deposit was defined at a claypan near Jubilee Trig. Tests of hand-dug pit samples of this clay for their granular absorbency properties were inconclusive due to a high degree of grade dilution through salt and dolomite impurities, but the results suggested the occurrence of low and medium granular absorbent grades. An auger drillhole sunk to 8 m depth alongside one of the shallow sampling pits did not penetrate to the base of the potentially mineable mineralised clay horizon. Within the four newly pegged mineral claims now covering the deposit, a programme of shallow rotary diamond core drilling on an initial 200 m grid, to obtain better quality and more representative samples for laboratory testing, is planned.
