The Mount Gunson mine Main Open Cut workings are developed in a mixed sulphide - oxide orebody. Flotation of oxidized ores from this orebody fails to give economically acceptable recoveries, whereas flotation of sulphides gives excellent recoveries. The oxidized mineralization is suitable for treatment by acid leaching, but for this processing method to succeed the ore particle size is critical, due to the impermeability of the host rock.
