Within the 1160 square km of presently relinquished ground, 66 exploratory rotary drillholes totalling 6178 m were completed between 1975 and 1986, of which 43 holes tested the Snowtown coal deposit centred about 10 km north-east of Snowtown. With the exception of one thin coal seam intersection made to the south of Balaklava, all reported coal occurrences in this relinquished area were restricted to a number of seams within the limits of the Snowtown deposit, where now a total in-situ resource in excess of 270 million tonnes is inferred. The maximum cumulative coal thickness is 8.4 m within a carbonaceous interval up to 40 m thick.
