Exploration has been undertaken for possible economic porphyry - style copper-molybdenum (-gold) mineralisation in a magnetically complex area located on the western flank of the Ordovician Bendigo Granite batholith, north of Mongolata. Initial field work performed during April 1982 comprised 1:25,000 scale geological mapping and surface geochemical sampling, plus ground magnetic confirmation of selected target magnetic anomalies. Reconnaissance RAB traverse drilling of 457 shallow vertical holes (total penetration 3378 m) over seven prominent aeromagnetic anomalies produced only scattered low order geochemical anomalies, except for delineating some more elevated Cu anomalies ocurring along the south-eastern side of one magnetic anomaly (Anomaly 'F'). Evidence of late-stage magmatic intrusion into the local Adelaidean country rocks is lacking. A separate subsequent investigation of these latter metasedimentary rocks, undertaken by reconnaissance geochemical sampling of particular features, indicated that the potential for finding orogenic style sediment-hosted gold mineralisation in the area was low.
