A subcropping Tertiary sub-basin located about 20 km east of Burra has been investigated by CRAE for possible economic buried sedimentary occurrences of coal, uranium and deep lead alluvial gold. During July 1980, gravity traverses totalling 18 line km were acquired, which delineated a 2 mGal gravity low extending over 3 km. 3 rotary mud vertical open holes with a total penetration of 263 m were drilled to test the Tertiary sedimentary sequence within the anomaly, and hole 81MBR26 encountered minor lignite fragments, but none of the holes returned reliably anomalous base metal or gold assay results. Alluvial gold potential was also investigated by sampling the sediments cut in 3 surface streambed hand augered holes and in 21 RAB holes for 352 m drilled on possible palaeochannel targets, with negative results in every case. CRAE flew a low level airborne magnetic and radiometric survey across the Florieton district during August 1980, as part of a regional search for possible diamonds existing within kimberlite intrusions. The magnetic relief was seen to be very low, with only slight perturbations probably relating to subtle basement variations or sedimentary discontinuities. The company selected 16 aeromagnetic anomalies, 2 of which lay inside EL 745, as having likely signatures of inferred kimberlite intrusive source bodies worthy of ground follow-up. Anomalies FN10 and FN14 were therefore profiled with detailed grid-based ground magnetics, and the former, which lies in an area that represents part of a palaeochannel, was tested during November 1982 by a single vertical rotary mud drillhole that terminated in Adelaidean siltstone bedrock at 92.4 m depth. Some variably maghemite - bearing, coarse grained gritty Cainozoic fluvial sediments were intersected over a 14 m thick interval down to 22 m depth. This drillhole obtained a 5.4 m long bottom hole HQ core of the Adelaidean bedrock, but it recorded no kimberlite, and therefore the targeted magnetic anomaly is thought to be explained by the uphole magnetic detritus. Assaying of the sediments intersected returned gold values of up to 0.11 ppm Au, which probably reflect palaeodrainage dispersions from the nearby Mongolata gold occurrence. A review of the aeromagnetic data was subsequently conducted to try to define the extent of auriferous palaeochannels, and two channels were interpreted lying near the western boundary of the licence. The most prominent such channel was then drilled during August 1983 by a single traverse of the aforesaid 21 RAB holes put in 50 m apart, and the existence of a broad shallow ?Quaternary channel was confirmed. Analyses of the cover sediments and underlying basement for gold and a suite of other trace elements showed that the gold content was below detection limits, while elevated arsenic in the basement mudstone, to 42 ppm As, may be due to limonite veins commonly present within it.
