Drilling (132.8 metres) included fully cored geotechnical hole to basement to estimate mine planning constraints for open cut mining. The unconfined aquifer above the lignite must be dewatered for mine slope stability. Overburden contains 2 layers of very high strength limestone which will affect excavation conditions. The carbonaceous clay overburden is highly plastic and appears to have very low residual strength properties which will make spoil pile stability critical.
