15 vertical exploratory auger holes totalling 348.4 m were drilled in a search for shallowly buried deposits of aluminous clays or claystone located close to the licensee's Rapid Bay limestone quarry and coatal shipment facility, that might be of use in cement manufacture. The shale occurring on Section 36, Hundred of Waitpinga is unsuitable for the intended purpose due to its high alkali levels and, while that occurring nearby on Sections 37 and 38 is suitable to use, the presence of a high water table would hinder quarrying. Shales which occur on Section 220, Hundred of Yankalilla have the best properties and are attractive for prospective quarrying.
