As part of a base metal exploration programme looking for possible stratabound or exhalative/hydrothermal deposits in Cambrian metasediments, which was undertaken approximately 75 km north-east of Adelaide, stream sediment sampling along the base of the Cambrai Fault scarp during October-November 1981 (44 x minus 10 plus 20 mesh size fraction samples collected and assayed), outcrop ultraviolet lamp-lit traversing, ground magnetic surveying, and geochemical analyses of 579 rock chip samples, mostly failed to locate significant tungsten mineralisation in quartz-tourmaline veined rocks at the Keyneton scheelite prospect. Three varied, short strike length aeromagnetic anomalies which were defined by a consultant geophysicist were inspected on the ground, but nothing was seen that would warrant further work. Only low trace metal values were returned from sampling of outcrops and float. After geological mapping, geochemical sampling, and ground magnetic, gravity and Sirotem surveys were completed at Schneider's Gossan, inclined percussion drilling during August 1983 (2 holes for 232 m) of a gravity/magnetic anomaly which is semi-coincident with this gossan intersected some barren, weakly magnetic early Cambrian basalt flows that have been extruded along the Palmer Fault zone. No kimberlite indicator minerals were observed in the heavy mineral concentrates obtained from a single 27 kg stream sediment bulk sample taken from the northern creek in the Schneider's Gossan area. Following mapping, surface and underground sampling, and the conduct of an IP survey over a breccia zone occurring around the historic Mount Rhine silver-lead(-gold) mine, vertical percussion drilling during September 1983 (one hole to 120 m) of an IP chargeability anomaly detected within a fold closure to the north of the mine encountered a calcareous schist containing insignificant (1-3%) disseminated sulphides. Ultraviolet lamp traverses made along Kanappa Creek found bedrock scheelite mineralisation in coarse grained tremolite-carbonate skarn rocks, downstream from the Kanappa mine. Scheelite grains were also detected by UV illumination on the crushed ore dump material from the mine. Anomalous tungsten values (max. 1.16% W) were returned from assaying of grab samples. Diamond drilling during May 1984 (one inclined HQ/NQ cored hole to 170.1 m) of an aeromagnetic anomaly at the Kanappa South mine intersected pyrrhotite-magnetite skarn alteration within the Milendella Limestone Member, but encountered no scheelite, thus downgrading the area's potential for hosting Cantung style pyrrhotite-scheelite mineralisation. An infill ground magnetic survey was acquired over the dipolar aeromagnetic anomaly defined adjacent to the Kanappa South mine. Modelling of the magnetic data indicated a vey small, highly magnetic source that was interpreted to be a pod of magnetite skarn within the Milendella Limestone Member.
