Exploration for platinum group metals in possible chromite-rich layers within a shallowly buried layered mafic/ultramafic igneous intrusive at Kalanbi, 20 km north of Ceduna, has consisted of RAB drilling in a single fence across the associated magnetic anomaly (73 holes totalling 2381 m). No chromite bands were intersected, but weakly anomalous platinum and palladium values were associated with the highest assayed chromium values. Petrological observations of preserved primary igneous textures in bottomhole samples taken from within the intrusion suggest that these precious metals are unlikely to have been significantly mobilized by the regional metamorphism which has subsequently affected the rocks.
