Geological mapping indicates that the Magazine Hill clay deposit belongs not to the Tregolana Shale, but to a claystone unit at the base of the Whyalla Sandstone. Extensions of the deposit could occur beneath a small plateau of Whyalla Sandstone about 2 km west of Magazine Hill. The possible extent of clay here is 2 square km and up to 10 m in thickness. The clay is used for the manufacture in Adelaide of pottery, porcelain ware and electrical ware.
