Exploration for possible buried occurrences of unconformity-related uranium mineralisation, undertaken within an area located approximately 26 km west-southwest of Cowell on eastern Eyre Peninsula, has included the acquistion during July 1979 of a 500 line km airborne magnetic/radiometric survey at 250 m line spacing, the conduct of ~50 line km of follow-up ground- based magnetic, radiometric, IP/resistivity, gravity, SIROTEM and radon emanometry surveys over selected magnetic and radiometric anomalies, accompanied by grid-based, 1:2500 scale geological mapping, trenching, rock chip and soil geochemical sampling, and the drilling of 35 percussion, 21 RAB and 4 diamond exploratory holes for a total penetration of 2533 m, including 589 m cored. Although no significant uranium mineralisation was encountered, the drilling confirmed the existence of a prospective unconformable and sheared contact between Middle and Early Proterozoic basement units (Blue Range beds on Katunga Dolomite/Mangalo Schist) that lies along a major regional fault zone, and also revealed the presence of a second, more northerly fault structure. Significant silicification, chloritisation/clay alteration and haematisation of the country rocks, extending up to 50 m away from the fault trace, appear to be related to the former passage of hydrothermal fluids along these faults, which also currently exhibit a throw of at least 90 m. Soil sampling over IP anomaly 22a on the Ben Buy prospect returned up to 1800 ppm U, plus high lead and zinc values, inferred to have been scavenged from primary uranium minerals present in the silicified and ferruginised Katunga Dolomite beneath the unconformity. Trenching carried out along strike from this anomaly revealed very small amounts of yellow secondary uranium minerals; grab samples of the host graphitic dolomite assayed up to 30 ppm U (background 4 ppm). Samples of coarse clastic metasediments in diamond drill core were evaluated for their suitability to undergo Rb-Sr geochronology determinations, but were assessed as unsuitable due to their grain heterogeneity.
