As part of continuing regional exploration for possible economic concealed sedimentary uranium deposits in an area extending east and north of Minnipa, open hole rotary drilling of 44 holes (total 2564 m) along seven traverses located adjacent to the southern Gawler Ranges successfully intersected prospective Tertiary sediments of the buried Narlaby Palaeochannel, which is proving to be a large, northwestwards-draining system with many tributaries. Traces of uranium mineralisation were found in Eocene (Pidinga Formation equivalent) sediments and are also associated with carbonaceous sediments in the overlying ?Pliocene (Loxton sands equivalent) sediments. The sediment fill of the main palaeochannel appears to be in a reduced state everywhere that it has been drilled, but some of the tributary sediments are oxidised, so prospective uranium depositional redox cells may exist near these latter channels' confluence with the principal channel.
